Label It WA seeks GMO labeling initiative on ballotOct 6th, 2012 | Category: News
STATE – Label It Wa is gathering 320,000 signatures to place Initiative 522 on the ballot to require GMO labeling in Washington. The initiative would require food sold in retail outlets to be labeled if the ingredients are produced through genetic engineering. An estimated 70 percent of non-organic processed foods contain some – or several – genetically engineered ingredients, according to organizers. Organizers must collect 241,153 valid signatures of registered Washington voters to get the necessary count to turn in to the state legislature by January 4, 2013. The legislature has the option to adopt I-522 during the next scheduled session; if they do not it will go to a vote of the people on the November 2013 ballot.
